NAWLEA Receives National Award for Excellence in Conservation Law Enforcement

Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies recognizes groundbreaking accreditation program for exceptional national-level teamwork.
The North American Wildlife Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. (NAWLEA) has been honored with the 2026 Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) Conservation Law Enforcement Award for Exceptional National-Level Teamwork Achievement.
This prestigious national recognition celebrates NAWLEA's extraordinary leadership, innovation, and professionalism in advancing conservation law enforcement through the establishment of the first accreditation program developed specifically for conservation law enforcement agencies in North America.
The award recognizes a collaborative effort involving conservation law enforcement leaders and professionals from multiple states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia, who shared a vision of establishing professional standards tailored to the unique responsibilities of wildlife and natural resource law enforcement agencies.
A Vision Built Through Collaboration
The concept of a national conservation law enforcement accreditation program originated during the 2020 Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (SEAFWA) Spring Chiefs Meeting. Conservation law enforcement leaders recognized the value of accreditation in promoting professionalism, accountability, operational effectiveness, and continuous improvement. However, existing accreditation programs often included standards designed for traditional law enforcement agencies that did not fully address the specialized missions of conservation officers.
Beginning in 2021, representatives from wildlife law enforcement agencies across the South Eastern States worked collaboratively to develop a program specifically designed for the profession. Through countless hours of meetings, policy development, standards review, and organizational planning, the initiative evolved into NAWLEA.
In 2022, the organization formally established its Board of Directors, developed its accreditation framework, and began laying the foundation for a national program that would provide conservation law enforcement agencies with a meaningful and rigorous process for demonstrating professional excellence.
The award represents not simply the accomplishments of individual agencies, but the collective dedication of conservation law enforcement professionals working across state boundaries to advance their profession.
Establishing a New Standard for Conservation Law Enforcement
NAWLEA's accreditation program provides a comprehensive framework for evaluating conservation law enforcement agencies against professional standards addressing organizational accountability, training, use of force, evidence management, investigations, operational readiness, and specialized enforcement responsibilities.
Unlike traditional accreditation programs, NAWLEA's standards specifically address the unique missions of conservation law enforcement, including vessel operations, aviation, specialized equipment, and human-wildlife conflict management.
Since the program began accepting applications in 2024, it has achieved several significant milestones.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission became the first agency to achieve NAWLEA accreditation in March 2025, followed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division Law Enforcement Section later that year. In April 2026, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division became the third accredited agency.
These accomplishments demonstrate the growing commitment among wildlife law enforcement agencies to professional accountability and nationally recognized best practices.
A Lasting Investment in the Profession
The AFWA Conservation Law Enforcement Award represents a significant milestone for NAWLEA and the conservation law enforcement profession.
The organization's success demonstrates what can be accomplished when agencies set aside jurisdictional boundaries, share their expertise, and work toward a common goal.
Through its accreditation program, NAWLEA is helping participating agencies strengthen operational practices, improve officer safety, reduce organizational risk, promote public confidence, and build a culture of continuous improvement.
The 2026 AFWA award recognizes more than the creation of an accreditation program. It recognizes a shared commitment to advancing conservation law enforcement and establishing a lasting foundation of professionalism, accountability, and excellence for future generations.
